VAT relief can apply when the recipient is recognised by HMRC. Your accountant decides.

VAT relief for eligible donations

Eligible gifts can qualify for relief from VAT on the donation. This does not automatically make VAT on the purchase recoverable. Check the charity, intended use and item value against HMRC guidance; purchase VAT follows the normal recovery rules.

Limits apply per item, excluding VAT, using the lower of original cost and current equivalent purchase value. See HMRC’s donation guidance.

Specified Goods — £200 cap (ex. VAT)

Technology (laptops, tablets, phones), Household appliances (fridges, washing machines), Furniture (desks, chairs, beds), Flooring (carpets, rugs, vinyl)

£200 excluding VAT is £240 including VAT at 20%; other eligibility conditions apply

Standard Items — £100 cap (ex. VAT)

Everything else: stationery, books, kitchenware, hygiene products, clothing, art supplies

£100 excluding VAT is £120 including VAT at 20%; other eligibility conditions apply

Excluded from this relief

Duty-liable alcohol, tobacco and vaping products are excluded from this relief

Example with eligible tax relief

A £120 purchase including 20% VAT could cost £75 after relief: £20 of recoverable VAT and £25 corporation tax relief on the remaining £100. This assumes full VAT recovery, an allowable deduction at 25% and an eligible donation. Savings vary; ask your accountant to confirm your position.

You pay £75. The school or charity gets something that would have cost them up to £120 from their own budget, freeing that money for other things they need.

Delivery Costs:

Keep delivery charges separately identified on your receipt. Their tax treatment depends on the circumstances; do not assume every delivery charge is deductible.
