VAT relief for eligible donations
Applies when the school or charity is recognised by HMRC. Your accountant decides.
Based on HMRC rules from 1 April 2026.
Eligible gifts can qualify for relief from VAT on the donation. Purchase VAT is recoverable only where the normal rules allow it. Check the charity, intended use and per-item value; being under the limit alone is not enough.
✓ Specified goods
£200 cap (ex. VAT)
Pay up to £240 including VAT.
- • Laptops, tablets, phones
- • Fridges, washing machines
- • Desks, chairs, beds
- • Carpets, rugs, vinyl
✓ Standard items
£100 cap (ex. VAT)
Pay up to £120 including VAT.
- • Stationery, art supplies
- • Books, toys, games
- • Kitchenware, hygiene
- • Clothing, sports gear
✗ Excluded goods
(duty-liable products excluded from this relief)
- • Alcohol
- • Tobacco
- • Vaping products
Check the value used for relief
The limit uses the lower of the donor’s original cost and the current equivalent purchase value, excluding VAT. A shop’s advertised retail price does not determine eligibility. See HMRC’s donation guidance and ask your accountant which reliefs apply.
